Etymologically, the name Jarne comes from the Latin aguarna or villa, a fitting description for this residential town as it stands today. La Jarne also offers an interesting architectural heritage, including a Romanesque church, a chateau, 17th-c. houses along the "old street" and even a megalithic dolmen. This is a lively and energetic community, which counts numerous associations.
Surface area :  842 hectares.
Location :  on the Aunis plain, 10 km south-east of La Rochelle.
Population :  2,054 inhabitants (1999 census, an increase of 421 over 1990): 24.5% under 18; 14.6% 60 and over; 52.9% working age.
Economy :  4 enterprises in industry, 5 in construction, 10 shops, 16 in services, 17 farms.

Main community facilities :
multipurpose hall, socio-cultural activities centre, tennis courts, soccer field, riding stables, golf course.
