At the conurbation's core, this is
a "beautiful and generous" city, offering a variegated architecture
along its medieval lanes, on its Renaissance façades, or in
its 18th-c. town houses. The stones that built La Rochelle tell
of its history as a free and rebellious city, and the towers
framing the Vieux Port have captivated generations of watercolourists.
Still, La Rochelle's sights are on the future, investing in
its neighbourhoods and carving out new destinies southward,
towards the Ville en Bois and Minimes quarters. To the west,
the commercial harbour at La Pallice is the population's balcony
over the ocean. This coastal city teems with activity, but in
each heart nestles the image of a wind-filled sail. |
