Our area, our towns |
n The
coastline's low limestone cliffs north of the conurbation slope
off gradually towards the south, widening onto beaches and bird-filled
marshes. Inland from the coast stretch the fertile fields of the
Aunis plains. Nestled in these landscapes, seventeen towns
and villages clustered around a core city, La Rochelle, have preserved
their traditional character despite a quarter century of booming population
growth and modernisation. Together, these municipalities form a
territory, a community of life for some 147,000 inhabitants, looking
outward onto the Atlantic Ocean.
