| Created relatively recently (1993), La Rochelle University cultivates the strengths of youth: widespread use of NICTs, an outlook that is at once international and in tune with the immediate environment, education with a professional focus and innovative research, not to mention a pleasant seaside setting. |
- An open path to success
La Rochelle University is attentive to the individual and strives to accompany each student on his or her road to success. It has set up a whole system of assistance, which begins with an initiation in university methodology for incoming students.
NICTs are incorporated as fully as possible into curricula and the University puts the necessary computer equipment at the students' disposal, including workstations in all buildings and even a portable computer loan service. Language learning is likewise stressed, whatever the student's field of study, and the University partners increasingly with foreign universities. It has particularly productive relations with the Asia Pacific region. In fact, students enrolled in bachelors and masters programmes in business relations and tourism are taught Chinese, Indonesian or Korean as well.
In addition, the University places its pool of expertise at the service of the business community to encourage innovation.
- A broad range of programmes
- Bachelors, Masters, Doctorate
Like other universities, La Rochelle adopted the BMD (bachelors, masters, doctorate) reform in 2005. The emphasis on vocational training and education (40% of the curricula) nevertheless remains strong. The programme offer is structured around five cores:
- law
- management
- literature, languages, the arts and social sciences
- science and technology
- environment and coastal habitats
Within each core and sometimes across disciplines, the special fields in masters and doctoral programmes embrace the University's priority themes – primarily the environment and sustainable development, law and territories, tourism and heritage, biotechnologies and agri-food and digital imaging.
The institution also boasts a large continuing education department, a judicial research centre and a Centre for the preparation of competitive examinations (CAPES for secondary school teachers, CAPLP for vocational school teachers), which achieves success rates far above the national average.
- Five IUT departments
The Institut Universitaire de Technologie (IUT), which offers a two-year programme, took the BMD reform on board by assigning 120 cumulative credits to its degree (the DUT). What is known as the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) enables students to pursue their bachelors degree studies and, in La Rochelle, to prepare for five vocational degrees in the following IUT departments:
- marketing techniques
- biological engineering
- civil engineering
- computer science
- telecommunications and network engineering

- University research
La Rochelle University has 13 research laboratories manned by young, dynamic teams. Their work is organised around such broad interdisciplinary themes as the environment, sustainable development, international trade or digital imaging.
