Renewal of the economic base
Greater La Rochelle underwent far-reaching technological and
industrial changes during the 70s. Gone are the two economic
powerhouses of the time, the shipbuilding Chantiers Navals and Peugeot,
the carmaker.
The two growth industries today are yachting and food
processing (specifically in "nutrition-health"). The service
industry is also well represented, in particular by the rapidly
expanding information and communications technologies. In all, the
local economy counts some 7,000 enterprises employing nearly
30,000 people.
Economic development
To faster local economic growth,
the Urban Community puts a premium on the emergence of sectoral specialisation.
To grow and flourish, an industry has to be able to count on
infrastructure, research laboratories, training resources and, of
course, an influx of business concerns.
