The Urban Community has for years been inventing
and testing "clean" modes of transport. After the successful bicycle
experiment, it built and launched the first solar-powered ferry in
France in 1998. Two years later, it participated in setting up an
experimental tramway line.
Impetus from companies located within the conurbation has helped make
these innovative policies possible. |
n In Aytré,
Alstom invented the tramway of tomorrow. The company tested
and designed novel infrastructure and new technologies. The goal was
to cut the cost per kilometre in half, making the tramway financially
feasible in urban areas with a population of 150,000. Iris Catamarans developed a new generation
of high-speed launches featuring a modular layout for carriage of
passengers and/or freight.
In Perigny, Delphi launched the production of common-rail injectors.
This innovation makes for cleaner diesel fuel consumption.
In addition to launching the first "Around town without my car!"
day in 1997, an operation which then spread to other cities in
France and abroad, the Urban Community implements environmentally
friendly transport solutions for the local population.
People in the community can subscribe to Liselec, a self-service
electric car hire system, and use any one of the fifty electric cars
in the fleet on a self-serve basis.
Another project, Elcidis, was designed to free the streets
in the city centre of delivery van traffic. Parcels are received and
stored on a platform and then delivered to destination in electric
vehicles. |
