A few simple ways
to become eco-citizens
|
| Cutting back waste production at the source, conserving energy, protecting the water from pollutants... little efforts that together can do a lot for the planet. |
I use low-energy lightbulbs
and I switch off the light when I leave the room. I turn off my audio, video or DVD appliance's standby mode. A TV permanently on standby accounts for 70% of its total power consumption.
I prefer showering over a bath
and when I brush my teeth, I don't leave the tap running: brushing teeth consumes 12 litres/minute if the water's left running.
I prefer taking my bike, not a car,
and public transport to get around. Either of them lowers my share of CO2 emissions.
To go to work, or for my longer trips, I use car sharing,
a more ecological, economical and pleasant means of transportation. To find out more: www.covoiturage17.com
I sort my refuse
to give recyclables a second life: paper, cardboard, glass, plastic bottles, cans, aluminium trays. To find out more about waste collection in the conurbation.
I take toxic products to the waste sorting unit
Solvents, gasoline, detergents, paint, cleaning agents, all of these household products are harmful to the environment. I never dispose of them in a sink or toilet.
I start composting in my garden
Not only is my bin lighter without those biodegradable scraps but my plants are healthier thanks to the organic compost, much better than chemical fertilizer. To find out more about compost.
I avoid using insecticides
They are harmful to bees and to my health. I look for less destructive ways of getting rid of aphids or slugs. To find out more, take a look at the guide du jardinage écologique (in French) on the Echo-Mer website.
